Using Thermal Imaging as a Supplementary Inspection Tool
Thermal imaging cameras, once specialized and expensive tools, have become more accessible and are increasingly used as a supplementary inspection method for identifying issues not always visible through standard visual or measurement-based checks. In electrical panels and appliance wiring, a thermal camera can reveal a connection running hotter than its surroundings, often indicating a loose or corroded connection developing resistance and heat before it becomes visible as discoloration or produces a noticeable smell. For cooling appliances, thermal imaging can help visualize temperature distribution across a coil surface, revealing sections that are not cooling evenly, which can indicate partial refrigerant blockage or uneven airflow across specific areas of the coil that a single-point temperature reading might miss.
Insulation gaps around refrigerant piping, sometimes difficult to spot visually if covered by other materials, show up clearly on a thermal image as a localized temperature difference along the pipe run. While thermal imaging is a useful supplementary tool, it works best alongside, rather than instead of, direct measurements like current draw and pressure readings, since a thermal image shows temperature patterns but does not by itself explain the underlying cause, which still requires further investigation once an anomaly is identified.
