What Happens During a Refrigerant Recharge Procedure
A refrigerant recharge procedure follows a specific sequence to ensure the system is restored to its correct operating condition rather than simply adding gas until cooling seems to improve. The process typically begins with confirming and repairing any identified leak, since charging a system with an unresolved leak wastes refrigerant and provides only temporary improvement before the same symptoms return. Once the system is confirmed leak-free, it is evacuated using a vacuum pump, removing any air and moisture that may have entered during the repair, since both air and moisture inside the sealed refrigerant system reduce efficiency and can cause internal corrosion or ice formation at the expansion device over time if not removed.
After achieving and holding a target vacuum level for a specified period, confirming the system holds vacuum without leaking back to normal pressure, refrigerant is then introduced to the system in a measured amount based on the manufacturer's specified charge weight for that model, using a scale or charging cylinder to track the exact quantity added rather than charging by pressure reading alone. Following the recharge, the system is run and monitored, checking both pressure readings at the service ports and the resulting temperature differential at the vents, confirming the appliance is cooling within its expected performance range before the service is considered complete.
