Why Appliance Wiring Colors and Connections Matter
Correct wiring during appliance installation or repair follows standardized color conventions and connection practices that exist specifically to prevent electrical hazards, and deviating from them, even unintentionally, introduces risk that may not be obvious until a fault occurs. Live, neutral, and earth wires each serve a distinct function, and swapping live and neutral connections, while sometimes still allowing an appliance to appear to function normally, can leave exposed metal parts electrically live even when the appliance switch is off, creating a shock hazard during routine cleaning or maintenance. Earth continuity, meaning an unbroken path from the appliance's metal casing back to the main earthing point, is what allows a fault current to safely divert away from a person touching the appliance rather than passing through them, making a properly connected earth wire one of the most important individual connections in any appliance installation.
Wire nut connections or terminal block connections should be checked for tightness periodically, since a loose connection generates heat under load and can eventually become a fire risk, distinct from the immediate shock risk of an incorrect connection. Using wiring rated for the appliance's actual current draw, rather than reusing thinner wire simply because it was available, ensures the wiring itself does not become the weak point in an otherwise correctly installed system.
