Water appearing around an appliance is not always caused by a genuine leak; in many cases it is simply condensation forming on a cold surface exposed to warmer, humid air, and distinguishing between the two prevents unnecessary or misdirected repair attempts. Condensation typically appears as a light film of moisture on the outside of a cold surface, such as the exterior of a refrigerator door in a very humid kitchen, or on uninsulated refrigerant piping running between an indoor and outdoor AC unit, and tends to be more pronounced during humid weather or when a cold surface is newly exposed to warm air.
An actual leak, by contrast, usually produces a more consistent flow or dripping pattern traceable to a specific point, such as a cracked drain pan, a loose hose connection, or a failed door seal, rather than a general film spread across a surface. Checking whether the moisture reappears quickly after being wiped away, and under what conditions, helps distinguish the two: condensation typically reappears fastest in high humidity and may not reappear at all in drier conditions, while a genuine leak continues regardless of ambient humidity as long as the appliance is operating.
Insulating exposed cold surfaces, such as refrigerant lines, is generally the correct remedy for condensation-related moisture, whereas an actual leak requires locating and repairing the specific failed component rather than adding insulation, which would not address the underlying cause.
