During cooking, hot air naturally rises from the cooktop carrying smoke, steam and microscopic grease particles. A kitchen chimney creates controlled airflow that captures these rising contaminants before they spread across the room. If airflow is interrupted by poor installation, blocked filters or unsuitable ducting, some particles may escape into the surrounding kitchen. Maintaining an unobstructed ventilation path helps the chimney remove airborne contaminants more effectively.

Air moves more efficiently through a straight duct than through one containing unnecessary turns or sudden direction changes. Every additional bend creates turbulence and increases airflow resistance. Professional installers therefore design the exhaust path to remain as direct as practical while following building constraints and manufacturer recommendations. A well-planned duct layout supports efficient ventilation and easier maintenance.

The smoke collection process begins as soon as rising cooking fumes enter the capture zone beneath the chimney canopy. Before smoke reaches the grease filters, the blower creates negative pressure that guides warm air upward. A larger and properly positioned capture area helps prevent smoke from escaping into the kitchen. Correct installation height and chimney alignment play an important role in maximizing the effectiveness of this initial capture stage.
