The smoke collection process begins as soon as rising cooking fumes enter the capture zone beneath the chimney canopy. Before smoke reaches the grease filters, the blower creates negative pressure that guides warm air upward. A larger and properly positioned capture area helps prevent smoke from escaping into the kitchen. Correct installation height and chimney alignment play an important role in maximizing the effectiveness of this initial capture stage.

As a kitchen chimney exhausts smoke and cooking vapours outside, fresh air must enter the kitchen to replace the exhausted air. Without adequate replacement air, the blower may experience increased airflow resistance, reducing extraction efficiency. Natural ventilation through windows or dedicated ventilation openings helps maintain balanced airflow. Considering air replacement during installation contributes to more consistent smoke removal and improved indoor comfort.

Smoke drifting sideways instead of moving directly toward the chimney may result from surrounding airflow created by ceiling fans, open windows or air-conditioning systems. Kitchen layout and chimney positioning can also influence airflow patterns. Evaluating these environmental factors alongside the ventilation system provides a more complete understanding of smoke extraction performance.
